DETAILED CASE STUDIES
The publishing house of Adam and Charles Black was founded in 1807 when Adam Black opened his own bookshop shortly after his twenty-third birthday. Originally the company was based in Edinburgh where many booksellers were also publishers and all publishers were booksellers. In June 1889 the company made the huge move from Scotland to London -- taking up residence in 4,5,6 and 7 Soho Square, together known as the Soho Bazaar. A&C Black is perhaps most famous for its publication of Who's Who since 1897, although the backlist and continuing publication schedule proves the extensive and varied nature of the list. Encompassing books on sport, fitness and training; books on Visual Arts, glass, ceramics and printmaking; titles on all aspects of sailing and boating (Adlard Coles Nautical); books for birdwatchers and wildlife enthusiasts (Christopher Helm) and of course a substantial reference list, A&C Black also publishes a wide range of children's fiction and non-fiction books aimed to aid teachers and parents in the education of their children. A&C Black also incorporates Peter Collin Publishing, including subject dictionaries and language titles that are used by students, translators and professionals around the world. Most recently A & C Black acquired Methuen Drama and gives the company the largest theatrical and drama list of its kind in the UK. Operating once more from Soho Square with approx 100 employees, the company is now owned by Bloomsbury Publishing (publishers of the Harry Potter series of books). A & C Black have been with Actionfile since 1995 using the Payroll system. Since joining the company in 2004 and having used many payroll systems in the past I have found this one to be by far the best, most user friendly and most helpful of them all. Whenever I have had to phone for support it's like talking to a friend - always cheerful banter but remaining professional and always solving my problem, however small or complicated it may be! In 2005 we added Bloomsbury Publishing to Actionfile adding another 150+ employees records and transferring all payroll data from a previous bureau managed system. By working closely with Actionfile on this, the transfer went without a hitch. By holding annual user group meetings for year end procedures and with the timely automatic updates throughout the year I can always be assured that HMRC returns will be accurate which makes my life less stressful. Thanks Actionfile! Sue Grant Payroll & Personnel Administrator Bloomsbury Publishing Plc and A & C Black Publishers Ltd
Back to top From Mudguards and Tool Boxes to Fire, Spill & Safety Products
Jonesco was established in 1967 to manufacture steel mudguards for commercial vehicles. In the mid 1970s the Company began to manufacture plastic mudguards to complement those made from steel. Whilst continuing to manufacture mudguards from steel, the plastic mudguard has rapidly gained prominence in most markets and now accounts for 97% of mudguard sales. The Company has grown continually and in December 1989 moved to a purpose-built 4-acre (16.200m²) site with space for further development and production. In 1998 an extension to the building allowed for several new machines to provide large capacity production of tool boxes and fire boxes. In 2006 a further extension was added to accommodate more manufacturing capacity. Jonesco plastic products are leading brand names with a high reputation and market share. They are widely fitted as original equipment and first installation. High quality, durability, competitiveness, service, high supply performance and support of a loyal distribution chain have gained this position. Our major share of the UK market is complemented by our international sales to a further 42 countries; international sales now accounts for more than half of all sales. Jonesco (Preston) Ltd. also owns a French subsidiary. In 2000 the Action File integrated Time & Attendance and Payroll system was selected to handle the factory staff clockings and the payroll for all employees. From the very beginning we found Action File staff easy to deal with and the systems were well designed and totally integrated, saving many hours duplicating data entry. Since then, in 2004 we introduced the HR system and were up and running with it fully integrated into the payroll with only limited training. "Action File has consistently impressed us with its dedication to providing good software and progressive development. Our latest investment has been the Web applications covering employee self service, absence management and web directories. Because we operate 24/7 shifts, we found the night shift workers were not able to see their managers to book holidays and were relying on leaving notes and hoping for a reply sometime soon! We put our heads together with Action File and came up with the self service and absence management web solution. As our factory staff don't have access to a PC (and certainly not one each), getting them on-line was going to be a challenge. Action File came up with the idea of putting a PC in the canteen and each employee can log on using their own personal code. The simple screen design means everyone can request holidays or other types of leave while they have their tea breaks. The following night they can log on again and see whether their request has been granted or rejected with explanations. Now everyone is happy and the Payroll and HR systems are updated with the bookings as well, saving duplicate data entry once more." Action File continues to invest in their products and we hope to get new releases to the Web applications shortly. Henry Jones Joint Managing Director Jonesco (Preston) Ltd Back to top
